De Bovenlanden, 14 april 2013 -

Afgelopen zaterdag hebben De Veenmollen, jeugdleden van het Instituut voor natuureducatie en duurzaamheid (IVN), deelgenomen aan een van de natuuravonturen van Hunnie in De Bovenlanden. Met ontwerpers Sophie Krier en Henriëtte Waal maakten zij samen met wilgenvlechters een aantal boten van vers geoogst griendhout. Zo combineerden de ontwerpers de Bovenlandse traditie van het vlechtambacht en het varen in de polder.
De veldopstelling op de kop van de kavel van Zorgboerderij Amstelkade was een test voor de veldwerkplek, die Krier en Waal deze zomer in De Bovenlanden zullen opleveren. Inzet van de serie natuuravonturen is naast de veldwerkplek het ontwerpen van gebiedseigen producten en buitenuitrusting die in dienst staan van dit speciale gebied en haar huidige en toekomstige liefhebbers.

Terwijl De Veenmollen een kim en mat leerden vlechten, is er voor de ouders van De Veenmollen een ontmoeting georganiseerd met boeren Arie van Oosterom en Ben Roeleveld. Tussen kauwende koeien werd de schaalvergroting van het boerenbedrijf besproken, het economische model van melkproductie en de veranderingen in het landschap en in de veehouderij na de grootschalige ruilverkaveling van de jaren zeventig. Voor de enige Lakenvelder van Arie, een prachtige maar nog naamloze koe met rood laken en blauwe tong (een kenmerk van dit oud Hollandse koeienras) is door de ouders een passende naam bedacht. Koe Bea Marrigje heeft afgelopen zaterdag dan ook een officiële naamdoop gehad en wordt binnenkort in het landelijke register ingeschreven.
Op 18 mei leren deelnemers tijdens het volgende avontuur Hunnie Fluit muziekinstrumenten van natuurlijke materialen maken onder leiding van wilgenman Jan van Schaik; de met koeienhuiden bedekte wilgenboten worden dan ook afgemaakt en te water gelaten. Al varen er tegenwoordig geen koeien meer over de waterwegen van De Bovenlanden, dankzij deze drie koeien kunnen liefhebbers de waterwegen straks wel gaan verkennen. De Hunnie Huidboot wordt op 18 mei officieel geschonken aan Zorgboerderij Amstelkade.

Measuring is knowing

The next step in the development of a own way of measuring and registration of the public space of the Schilderswijk: ‘‘ What is a measuring device? And, more important, how do you design it and what will it communicate?’’ The students of the research lab have tried to answer these questions in the past weeks by analyzing physical measuring devices and different professional and non-professional instruction manuals (physical or audiovisual).

These days online instruction movies are our new manuals. Where in the past we asked our family, friends our helpful neighbors how stuff had to be done. We now check Youtube or Vimeo, when we whant to know how to fix a flat tire or do our makeup. This inspired us to present our measuring devices/methods in short instruction movies. This week there will be a test day, where we can see if our ideas work. And work towards an interesting, spectacular or funny end result.

Project description: Oscar de Bakker ‘Obstacle Landscape’

Oscar de Bakker is researching the obstacles in the public space. By isolating the obstacles from their surroundings he creates an image wherein all ‘bollards, streetlights, traffic signs and other objects demand their own space in the street.

Last week Ruud Ridderhof visited DRS22. On behalf of the city of The Hague he’s responsible for the organization of the public space. He first was shocked by Oscars images but that didn’t keep him from sharing his knowledge on how the decisions on placing these items takes place. A lot of these “obstacles” are placed to generate certain behavior, in turns out. But be honest, how effective is a traffic sign that says that parking is forbidden when it has to be accompanied by rows of ‘amsterdammertjes’? And could it be that these mostly non-sensible looking objects have other hidden or unintentional functions?

Research Lab Next Door, part 2

In parallel with the exhibition ‘Orban Space’ in Stroom, participants of Research Lab Next Door study the process and ideas of urbanist and conceptual thinker Luc Deleu. Instruments to measure and register phenomena in the public space of the Schilderswijk are currently in development. Research Lab Next Door is an interdisciplinary research lab, initiated in September 2012 by the faculty of Interior Architecture / Furniture Design of the KABK in partnership with DRS22. Researchers and tutors: Krijn Christiaansen, Cathelijne Montens, Sophie Krier, Claudia Linders, Renate Boere, Ed van Hinte.

The guided tour of the exhibition 'Orban Space' in Stroom made urbanist Luc Deleu's passionate practice and body of thought tangible: "There are only two scales one should relate to: that of the human and that of the planet" – said programme director Francien van Westrenen. Top Office's studies of the way we order the world also resonated with many students. Departing from Deleu's self-fabricated measuring instruments, students will start next week with measurements of their own in the streets of the Schilderwijk. Their findings were presented to the public in the front space of Stroom on March 13th (13.00-17.00).
